Chapter 19

Seven Foxes and a Funeral

Smoke

“Smoke,” Venom bellows from inside the house. “Get the fuck in here. It’s time.”

I glance nervously at the house and then at Jinx. “Time for what?”

Not sure why I asked. I know the answer.

Jinx flashes me a vengeful grin. The expression gives me pause. I don’t know if I’m ready for this. I fidget as she pins a bedsheet to the clothesline. Moonlight makes the sheets look bone-white.

“Time to drag the fox out.” She picks up the empty laundry basket. “Let’s go.”

Time to drag the fox out. It’s a weird saying. Slash told me the story once. A fox kept sneaking into a village, stealing small animals. For days, the villagers searched for the thief. When they finally found it, they drove it out of its den with fire. They hung it from a pole in the town square for all to see. Justice for the criminal that had pissed the town off.

I finish hanging the last sheet on the line with a sigh. Jinx skips into the house like a little girl on T’rak’s Birthing Day. I could really like her if she weren’t a fucking bitch.

Feeling like a woman headed for the gallows, I drag my feet, shuffling into the barroom. The food Brute forced me to eat earlier turns in my stomach.

Venom is sitting at the bar with Hutch, Shadow curled up at his feet. Havoc, Brute, and Sage are all gathered around them talking.

The babble in the room stops as heads turn my way. I swallow. Shadow gets up and makes a beeline for me. I flinch away. It figures he’s pals with something I’m afraid of. Fear isn’t something I can afford to show these men.

“Shadow,” Venom growls. “Hec mek.”

Shadow whines, but returns to him and sits back down.

“She won’t hurt you,” Venom says impatiently. “Get your ass over here.”

He’s annoyed with her, and it occurs to me why. He doesn’t want her getting friendly with John’s killer. I don’t deserve her affection. It shouldn’t matter what he thinks, but it hurts.

As soon as I join them, Hutch leaps off his stool and rubs his hands together. “Ohh, we gonna have ourselves a hangin’, boss?”

Venom grins, but Havoc and Brute scowl at Hutch. Sage shakes his head, looking irritated.

“What?” Hutch says. “Chill out. I was only joking. Fuck.”

Venom pulls me into the middle of their circle and fixes me with a steady stare. “Strip,” he orders.

They’re just trying to humiliate me. They can’t kill me. I’m too valuable to them.

My gaze darts around the room, frantically looking for a way out. The men eye me with a mix of anger and grim anticipation. The hostility in the room sets me on edge.

With shaking hands, I slowly remove my clothes until I stand naked before them.

Havoc spins me around to face him. He’s holding a collar and leash. I tense. It’s just like the one that woman was wearing in the street.

He wraps the collar around my neck and snaps it closed.
